Jon loved the natural world; the design in the landscape, the exuberance of new life, the colours in flora.

What has also emerged as we have worked through the archive is a strong strand of marine scenes; of sea and riverscapes.

These are shown here under the broad heading of landscapes.

A key feature of much of this landscape work is the work on skies. Some of the most satisfying passages of paint reside in the weather above, and the source of the light.

Jon espoused the importance of working with tonal values and tonal harmony in a painting – often to dramatic effect.
